Standish Lawder was important both as a film artist and as an art historian. As an artist, he participated in early "expanded cinema" events organized by Jonas Mekas and made a series of provocative, visually ingenious films during the 1960s which are as compelling now as they were a half century ago. As an art historian, his pioneering art historical research on the European avant-garde of the 1920s resulted in "The Cubist Cinema," the first serious study of the origins of experimental film. This book examines Lawder's work as an artist and reproduces the original text of the 1975 edition of "The Cubist Cinema."
