In the short story "Ein Hungerkünstler" by Franz Kafka, protagonist Georg is a man that has a peculiar talent to resist hunger. One day he decides to put his exceptional ability on display and has a show where he goes up against a lion in a man-vs-beast type of competition. He loses because he gets hungry and starts eating the hay covering the cage's ground. This is due to his inability to resist hunger for any length of time.
