The Practice of the Presence of God has inspired readers for generations. Brother Lawrence, also known as Nicholas Herman, was a devout French Carmelite friar of the 17th-century who's aim in life was to simply love God with all his being and cultivate a sensitivity to the presence of God. The following book is a compilation of conversations and letters by Brother Lawrence giving us insight into his personal relationship with God and his singular focus on union with the Divine. The text was written over 300 years ago and later translated into English. Though some of the language may be dated, the heart of his message shines through with clarity, that the sensitivity to the presence of God in our lives and our love for Him is, and ought to be, our highest priority. Everything is second to love.

Through his teachings, we learn how we ourselves can grow and mature in conversing with God on a daily basis. The impact of this simple, yet powerful book can no doubt be life transforming. I hope that as you read you find encouragement in the power and simplicity of prayer. May you be blessed in your pursuit of God and be transformed by the freedom we have in Christ to come directly to the Father in conversation and friendship.
