This book is about hope for Nigeria

Looking around the country, we are in a state of intense frustration and heartbreak. Can we think of anything that we have been renowned for in the nation? There is zero account for inventions, development, and growth. If we do not stop our selfish interest, greed, and corruption in all areas of national life, we will collectively sink into the hole we have dug for ourselves.

It is time we stand up to our political leaders. Fairness to all Nigerians is what we are asking for. Our leaders must be congruent with their words and actions. It is time we turn things around. It is time we collectively join hands and fight to bring justice our way. It is time we fight hard to develop the nation and thereby develop ourselves. We seek a prosperous nation that is beneficial for all.

It is time for Nigerians to be healed, taking one step at a time each and every day. Eventually, the embezzlement of public funds and corruption will simmer in our nation. We must not allow the selfish greed of one person or a group of cabals striving for luxurious lifestyles to affect the rest of the nation.

We have also come to this hallowed spot to remind Nigerians of the fierce urgency of "Now". This is no time to engage in the luxury of cooling off, or to take the tranquilizing drug of "gradualism". Now is the time to make real, the promises of democracy. This book connects all of these in the light of hope that a new dawn will appear in the fading horizon in Nigeria.

Review Quotes:

It is easier to blame the government of the day for all the rots in the country, as many Nigerians are wont to; but have you asked yourself, "Am I innocent?" You may not be innocent after all, as Christine Umoekereka echoes in her book, Our Collective Contribution to the Decadence in Nigeria. This is a book that moves you to tears on the festering decadence in Nigeria and the role Nigerians play in permeating moral and ethical bankruptcy, as well as the responsibility of each individual in fixing the rot.

There are many lessons to take away from the chapters on mismanagement of public funds, political structure and organisation in Nigeria, lack of enabling environment for growth of industry and development, selfish ambitions among politicians and ordinary Nigerians, and political violence.

Reading through 'Our Collective Contribution to the Decadence in Nigeria', Umoekereka's passion and heartbreak for the country shines through. Though a nurse in Canada for over 20 years, she remains attuned to ongoings in her fatherland and wishes all would be well with her. That's why she has written this book, begging Nigerians to change our attitudes so that we can take our rightful place in the comity of nations. Her message echoes that of polemicist and poet, Odia Ofeimun who still believes Nigeria is saveable despite the rots. All it needs is a change of attitude and commitment to doing the right things.

It is evident that our situation is a collective contribution of our individual irresponsibility and lack of accountability which has led us to this state of corruption. This book really opened my mind, I did not only understand the problem we are facing as a nation but I am motivated to make a personal change. I believe anybody who reads this book will not be the same person but a better conscious citizen with a new mindset.
