Since the eve of history, man gave up some of his liberties for the value of "order". The conflict between freedom and security is a natural product of this fact which dominated the history of mankind. Whether this sacrifice was motivated by religion, ideology, or collective mind; it is a fact whose limits – not its legitimacy – was discussed, and any exceptions here prove the rule rather than cast doubt upon it. The western experience stresses that "order" is one of man's most precious possessions, and this is why the emergence and triumph of individualism is considered a historical turning point where the individual replaced both the Pope and collective mind.
