Santa Clara University once gained national recognition by garnering Orange Bowl and Sugar Bowl football trophies. Father Walter Schmit's founding of the famous "Wutzit Club" solved the problems of the young population during the war years and beyond. Schmidt added his efforts to amateur boxing and went on to serve as Chaplain at several Olympics. Adding to the city wide fame where the accomplishments of swimming coach, George Haines, who put life into the World famous Santa Clara Swim Club.
