Jan Yager, Ph.D. (the former J.L. Barkas) has added a new introduction to her classic study of major violent and property crime victims, VICTIMS, based on additional interviews and surveys. This new introduction is added to the 2015 updated introduction that precedes her original book, published by Scribner's in 1978, and reprinted in its entirety, now with updated bibliographic and resource references.

In the new introductions, you will read results of Dr. Yager's survey of 225 men and women that included their answer to the key questions, had they been a victim of a crime and, if they answered yes, was it reported to the police? (If not, why not?)

The newest introduction also includes excerpted interviews with primary and secondary crime victims of domestic abuse, sexual assault or rape, and other crimes, as well as service providers such as counselors to victims, a behavioral consultant, private investigators, and lawyers, among others.

You will also find a brief discussion of Victimology in this new introduction as well as updated crime statistics and a chart sharing the clearance rates provided in a recent FBI annual crime report, and why those rates matter in the fight against crime.

The author's original poem, "The Victims of Virginia Tech," that the author wrote following the mass school shootings at Virginia Tech on April 16, 2007 when 27 students and five faculty members were killed by a 23-year-old senior who shot and killed himself, is also included.
