In reviewing this 1889 volume in the English Men of Action series, the Scotsman wrote: "There are few, if any, more interesting life stories in our military history than that of the great Duke, and very few lives that form a more instructive or stimulating study. The story . . . is admirably told by Mr. Hooper."
