Published just after the author's death in 1911, this history is based on the diaries of William Russell (1740-1818), a merchant, Unitarian, and sponsor of the scientist-philosopher Joseph Priestley. William and Martha Russell faced violent mobs and capture by the French, and witnessed the French Revolution and the life of settlers in New England.
