Wells's 1913 novel is told as a letter from a father, to be read by his son upon coming of age. Stephen Stratton is involved in a hopeless love triangle with the aristocratic Lady Mary, a woman far above his social class. In this book, Wells uses old friendships as a means of describing the human condition.
