The Last Galley은 포에니 전쟁(the Punic Wars)을, III. Through the Veil은 빅토리아 시대(Victorian times)를 배경으로 하고 있으며, V. The Contest는 네로 황제(the Emperor Nero)를, VII. An Iconoclast는 그 유명한 비너스 상(Greek statue of Venus), VIII. Giant Maximin는 막시무스 1세(Maximinus I)를, XI. The Home-Coming은 황제 유스티니아누스 1세(Justinian)와 테오도라 황후(Empress Theodora)를 주요 등장인물과 소재로 삼아 독자들에게 마치 로마 제국의 하루를 거니는 듯 한 여정을 선사합니다. 전작의 11편이 다시 실린 단편집?! : 아서 코난 도일의 마지막 군단(The Last of the Legions and Other Tales of Long Ago by Arthur Conan Doyle)(1910)이 출간된 다음해 마지막 갤리선(The Last Galley; Impressions and Tales by Arthur Conan Doyle)(1911)이 출간되었습니다. 전작에 실린 13편의 단편 중 무려 11편이 다시 실렸다는 점에서 썩 좋은 구성은 아닙니다. PART II.의 여덟 작품 중 The Silver Mirror를 제외한 일곱 작품은 마지막 군단(The Last of the Legions and Other Tales of Long Ago by Arthur Conan Doyle)(1910)에 실렸던 것은 아닙니다. PART I.의 열 작품과 PART II.의 여덟 작품, 총 18편의 단편이 게제되었으며 이 중 11편은 전작과 중첩됩니다. 또한 전작과 겹치지 않는 단편 또한 이미 다른 잡지 등을 통해 발표된 바 있지요. 어지간한 코난 도일의 팬이 아닌 이상 구매하기 애매한 구성이긴 하지만, 그가 원체 다양한 단편을 썼고 각양각색의 테마로 선별한 단편집 또한 무수히 존재한다는 점을 감안한다면 이해가 되는 대목입니다. PART I.의 열 작품과 PART II.는 첫 번째 단편 The Silver Mirror는 전작에 게제된 바 있는 작품이나, 실린 순서는 완전히 달라졌습니다. 전작의 타이틀 작품인 마지막 갤리선(The Last Galley)을 일곱 번째로 배치하고, 두 번째 작품이였던 마지막 갤리선(The Last Galley)을 권두에 배치하여 책 제목으로 삼았습니다. 부제는 인상과 이야기(Impressions and Tales). 더 큰 이상을 향한 시험 비행(the past which maybe regarded as trial flights towards a larger ideal) : 작가 코난 도일은 서문(Preface)을 통해 역사 소설 단편에 인상과 이야기(Impressions and Tales)란 부제를 붙인 이유를 밝혔습니다. 이 작품에 작가의 의도가 충실하게 반영되었는지 판단하는 것은 독자의 몫일 것입니다. The first half is made up of a series of pictures of the past which maybe regarded as trial flights towards a larger ideal which I have long had in my mind. It has seemed to me that there is a region between actual story and actual history which has never been adequately exploited. I could imagine, for example, a work dealing with some great historical epoch, and finding its interest not in the happenings to particular individuals, their adventures and their loves, but in the fascination of the actual facts of history themselves. These facts might be coloured with the glamour which the writer of fiction can give, and fictitious characters and conversations might illustrate them; but none the less the actual drama of history and not the drama of invention should claim the attention of the reader. I have been tempted sometimes to try the effect upon a larger scale; but meanwhile these short sketches, portraying various crises in the story of the human race, are to be judged as experiments in that direction....
