The Manchester Man is a novel about Jabez Clegg, who worked in the Manchester cotton business and rose to commercial prominence during the industrial revolution. The novel is an amusing fictional voyage through Manchester's early nineteenth-century history, but it also raises serious issues like women's choices and domestic violence. The author Isabella Varley, who goes by the pen name Mrs. G. Linnaeus Banks, released The Manchester Man as a three-volume book in 1876.
