All time it takes to get to the the US from England, Wells is addressing a specifically male reader and talks about the concerns "he" would have in the same situation. He describes seeing NYC for the first time. There are some good points, as the outline of how to dissect expectations for the future, and parallels of "seeing" new places in fiction versus reality.
