Take one feisty redhead, one suitor, one former suitor, and one would-be suitor. Add one trans-Atlantic crossing, one English country house, and assorted mishaps and misunderstandings. Season with plenty of Wodehouse's trademark wit. Peruse at your leisure.
First published in 1922 as Three Men and a Maid, this relatively early work isn't as fully developed as some of the author's later masterpieces.
As one would expect from a Wodehouse story, there is a cast of eccentric characters. There's also some rather clever wordplay. Wodehouse peppers the narrative with several asides to his readers. The tone is effervescent, tempered with a gentle tongue-in-cheek mockery of both the upper class and the foolishness of young lovers.
Overall, The Girl on the Boat is certainly worth a read.
