A short story from the book: In the middle of the night in December, a man driving a car on a deserted highway spotted a lonely woman asking for help. The man stopped the car and asked what the problem was. She explained that she lived in a nearby village; her husband had left her there 2 hours ago when they were returning from the town on a motorcycle. He had promised he would return soon but still hadn't. She wanted to return to the house as soon as possible and ask about her husband. The driver agreed to give her a lift home. The woman sat on the passenger side and he began to drive. They spoke for a few minutes, then there was silence. About half an hour later, the man asked, "how far away is your village now?"
There was no response. He repeated the question and then turned his head to the passenger. He was astonished to discover that the lady had disappeared. The vanishing spirit has been a popular subject for the tales of ghosts found across entire India. Many people claim that they have encountered a person vanishing from their car.
