Brachus of Capua had never seen the like before! He had never seen an entire legion wiped out in front of his eyes. He never imagined it was possible!

And yet it happened.

And the creatures who did it seemed to be visitors from a nightmare! The gods alone knew what they were. Brachus certainly did not. He was a simple soldier. One of tens of thousands of legionaries who served Emperor Claudius.

They had been sent to Britannia, that wild and mist shrouded island north of Gaul. Three legions had gone there before his outfit. They had established a foothold on the island and Brachus's legion had been sent there along with two others to help quell the locals.

Brachus did not think these demons, these lizards who walked like men were locals! Where did they come from? Had the gates of the underworld opened up?

It was just the kind of prank the gods were known for. Let men think they were masters of their domain and then set the hordes of hell on them!
