The book was written during the times of European colonialism and stripping the land of resources in Africa. Heart of Darkness is a slim novel that belies the immense profundity it reveals about human nature. The book is written in lush proses which is commendable as English was Conrad's third language. Set as a story within a story, Heart of Darkness recounts the journey to Africa and up the Congo River by Marlow as a representative of a trading company and his fascination with the long unmet ivory trader Kurtz. It's a thought-provoking, intense, and break-taking read with undying themes like racism, moral confusion, and intricacies of human nature that hold just as much significance now as they did back then.
