Between the Acts is the final novel by Virginia Woolf.

In her own opinion it was 'more quintessential' than any of her others. Set in the summer of 1939 on the day of the annual village pageant at Pointz Hall, the book weaves together the musings of several disparate characters and their reactions to the imminence of a war which is to change the pattern of history.

Through her characters' passionate musings and private dramas, and through the enigmatic figure of the pageant's author, Miss La Trobe, Virginia Woolf's final novel both celebrates and mocks Englishness. Even so, the coming of war looms over the whole community, heralding a new act.

The book describes the mounting, performance and audience of a play at a festival in a small English village, just before the outbreak of the Second World War.
