Die fantastische Geschichte der Brigantine Die Wassernixe wurde im Jahre 1830 veröffentlicht. Dieser Seefahrtsroman ist im Long Island Sound (eine Förde im Westen des Atlantiks) des 17. Jahrhunderts angesiedelt. Doch da Cooper diese Geschichte in Sorrent niederschrieb, wirkt ihre Atmosphäre überraschend mediterran.
