So you have prostate cancer!' is Dr Brian Meade's personal encounter with a capricious common cancer through the strategy of integrative medicine and the mind of a scientist. In the past century the practice of non-mainstream medicine has been somewhat shunned by a hostile conservative medical profession, but in recent times there has been a more expansive and sympathetic attitude as manifest in this book. In his well researched cancer journey, Brian Meade pays tribute to the caring support of two surgeons both graduates of Monash University, where the philosophical approach in its formative years was to think broadly and laterally. Donald Murphy, a high profile orthodox urologist, who is Brian's local surgeon, has contributed some interesting and open minded insights to the book. The other surgeon is Professor Avni Sali, Australia's guru on integrative medicine, who has been a powerful medical and perhaps spiritual advisor to the author. The author also emphasises another powerful force in the healing process and that is the loving support of his family and that includes the person who prepares the all important meals. Written for the man with prostate cancer, the main message is that you can control prostate cancer through 'proactive surveillance'. In parts of the book the material is presented in a question-answer format. The author with the foresight of his scientific background, explains how he has embraced the essential tenets of integrative medicine. These can be summarised as an optimal natural sensible diet, nutritional supplements, exercise, mind-body medicine and meditation.
