本文以台灣詩人張德豐在1935年創作的兩首詩《天外天觀》做開場白介紹古箏的物理特性、解釋聲學原理及歷史上萊里爵士對氣泡爆炸現象的研究以及亥姆霍茲對弓拉弦發音模型的貢獻。古箏的發音原理、雁柱該如何擺放？為什麼在琴弦上塗上螢光劑後卻發現，怎麼也調不準音？調音的問題並沒有想像中的單純。除了人耳或者儀器的限制以外還有樂器本身的限制。
