1644 and the Royalist Cavaliers - the king's men - have arrived in Ruth's community. They are hunting Roundheads - Oliver Cromwell's soldiers - and their sympathisers. Ruth's father is away with Cromwell's army and her family are Roundhead sympathisers. Her brothers - aged 12 and 14 - might be thought old enough to fight.
