Roger Bartow, a hapless insurance defense lawyer struggling with his ex-wife's infidelity and feelings of meaninglessness, finds solace in a mysterious gentleman he meets on lonely hikes through Harriman State Park. The kindly gentleman's reluctant revelation that he is Lucifer strains Roger's slim grip on sanity forcing him to seek help from his best friend's Lutheran Pastor, Philip Webb. Attempts to have Roger meet with his own parish pastor, the pompous and ambitious Father Paul, bring a visitor from the Catholic Church's ancient "Officii Praestigiae," and a struggle between heaven and earth. Roger's finds a sense of belonging through his reconnection with his church. When a report of the encounter with Lucifer ends up in a tabloid, however, Roger, Father Paul and Reverend Webb are forced to choose between competing absolutes of faith, love, innocence and life.
