A thief has infiltrated a private social club in the coastal town of Totheroh, leaving an elderly widow gravely injured. Maggie, the receptionist with a keen eye for intrigue, comes across a diary with links to the victim – only to have it suddenly disappear. As the plot unfolds, a mysterious visitor begins leaving messages in code for a guest who may not exist and the club's staff of misfits ready themselves for the next break-in.
