Gloria suffers a scar on her face after a horse carriage accident. Desperate to find anyone to marry, she accepts a proposal from Robert, a reclusive farmer who lives nearby. She finds Robert to be attractive but she cannot get beyond the walls he's built around himself with his own years of disappointment and hurt. He has lost faith in God after the death of his first wife but wants to make good on her wish to have him get on with his life. He tries but can't seem to fall in love with Gloria...She thinks it is because of her scar but it is really because of the scars on Robert's heart. His spirit cannot take being left alone again.
