1997 gelang dem Norweger Børge Ousland die erste Solodurchquerung der Antarktis über den Südpol ohne Nachversorgung aus der Luft. Knapp 3000 km legte er zu Fuß und auf Skiern zurück. Dabei zog er einen Schlitten, der am Anfang der Expedition knapp 200 kg wog.
