Michael paused, wincing as if just realising the full extent of his own words. "What I mean is - we would be married in law only. I would not expect anything from you and we would simply share a house. A marriage of convenience, if you will."
Imogene opened her mouth - to shout, to order him to leave, anything - but all that left her lips was a heavy sigh. If Michael was as genuine as he seemed, it was a decent option. It was either that or let her children starve. With a sigh, Imogene looked him in the eyes and muttered, "I suppose it's better than my other options. All right, then."
They looked at each other for a long moment; her eyes dark and sombre, his concerned but relieved.
