Nicole Vonlee Titlow is a middle aged woman who is currently serving out a 20-40 year prison sentence in the G. Robert Cotton Correctional Facility for the second degree murder of her uncle, Don Rogers. At first glance, this case seems to be one of commonplace gold digging and an attempt to make some quick cash, but upon further reading, it quickly devolves into betrayal, back-handedness, ineffective counsel, and further tragedy. This otherwise average case drew in national attention because of the gambling, alcoholism, lies, and speculation on Titlow's sexual reassignment surgery. Titlow was ensnared by promises of enough money to be able to afford a life-saving surgery and was then used to her aunt's purposes in a malignant way. Her legal counsel repeatedly failed her, and so has the court system since then.
