Fifteen-year-old Kori has always been an outcast, both at home and at school. Her only companions are her beloved pets—birds, cats, a dog, and a horse. When a tragic accident claims the lives of her parents and brother, Kori and her younger sister Sera are uprooted from their rural home and sent to live with relatives they've never met in the suburbs.

Kori dreams of a fresh start, hoping to find acceptance from her new family, friendship at school, and love with a boy named Robin. However, her sister Sera quickly captures all the attention and affection Kori longs for. Standing up for her cousin against racist bullies only deepens Kori's outsider status.

When Sera and Robin have a falling out, Kori sees a chance to reclaim what she believes is rightfully hers. But as she battles against the popular girls and the dark, destructive voices in her head, Kori must confront her deepest fears and desires.
