The operating environment for future conflicts will be a place where Soldiers will struggle just to survive on a battlefield more lethal than anything seen since at least World War II. This is the scenario against which Army commanders at echelon should constantly train their formations for war. Throughout the force; however, we often find unit leaders at the brigade combat team (BCT) level and below struggling to imagine this hyper-competitive operating environment. They are consistently surprised at the tempo, pace, and competitiveness of a rotation at the National Training Center (NTC) in Fort Irwin, CA,—the best-replicated large-scale combat operations (LSCO) environment the Army offers. The purpose of this handbook is to set forth the "how to fight" concept and commensurate training techniques at echelon that allow units to succeed at the NTC.
