This is a short story...

My name is Jace MacAillelan. As a curious, typical fourteen-year-old, I devoured books on our legends: tales of The Guardians, of portals, of vicious fights between the clans of old, of Odin.

That is...until I, that inquisitive youth went looking for adventure. I dreamed of what I'd encounter on Earth, and I felt superior to my mates, for I found a portal. Me. I never told even my best friend when I first crossed. I savored the thrills, not wanting to share.

Now I wish I had heeded my father's warnings. What I'd give to be with my clan again: to hunt, fish, train, and shape-shift. I wouldn't even complain about school if I could wake in my own bed.

But I opened a gateway, revealed a portal. My family and friends paid the price. All dead, slaughtered because of me.
