Grieg's Peer Gynt Suite was written as Incidental Music in 1875 to a play of the same name by a Norwegian playright Henrik Isben, which was based on Norse Fairy Tales

The plot concerns a young Norwegian "Peer Gynt" who dreams of becoming Emperor of the World. His adventures include abducting a bride to be during her wedding, later abandoning her for another woman and being tormented and chased by gnomes and trolls. He travels to Morocco where he poses as a "Prophet", where is double crossed by an Arabian Princess. Finally, he returns to Norway to the land of the Trolls and the Old Man of Dovre, whose daughter and Kingdom he wants for himself

In 1888 and 1891, Grieg combined eight pieces into two Suites with four pieces each, the second Suite being Opus 55
