This short story is to help people who suffer from insomnia. It is based on scientific research that focuses on the effects of colored light on the human body.
My idea for the story first emerged when I was taking a psychology elective at Columbia University. I was studying full time at Pratt Institute where I tried to connect the theory of emotions with different properties of colors that we studied. In other words, I was trying to piece together different ideas that fit together, but not with the purpose of making any scientific claims of my own. Although my fantastical story is inspired by scientific theories I did not write it with the intention of connecting different scientific theories, because the two theories are each independent and not connected together in any way, the first dealing with emotions and the latter dealing with effects of colored light on melatonin.
The plot of the short story is fantastical but it can be interpreted in a realistic way. When a little girl can't sleep, her brother suffers from it. Together the siblings discover mysterious phenomena; metaphors for real-world problems.
