This book was written just after Chambers confessed to his earlier affiliation with the Communist Party and testified against his former friend and comrade, Alger Hiss, in perhaps the most celebrated espionage trial of the century. Witness is an autobiographical memoir. It is heart-warming, heart-rending, magnanimous and poignant. In it, Chambers tells of his experiences as a Communist agent in the United States as well as his renunciation of his Communist ideology and his conversion to Christianity. It bears witness against Communism and underscores the West's urgent need to stand both militarily and spiritually against Marxist dogma and Soviet plans for conquest. Chambers was recognized by critics on both sides of the spectrum as a truly gifted writer, to which Witness testifies.
