The ancient mermaid species known as Siren had been extinct for thousands of years. When the King Sisters were born it seemed that the species were making a comeback from extinction. When as adults they began to understand the reason why they had originally become extinct - they did not reproduce their own kind. What they did produce was beyond strange!
