By Andrew Barton 'Banjo' Paterson
Narrated by Denis Daly
Andrew Barton Paterson was born on a property near Orange in New South Wales, in 1864, and was educated first by a governess and later at Sydney Grammar School. He qualified as a lawyer but devoted much of his time to writing, and gained national popularity especially for his poetry and ballads. He was also very active as a journalist.
The works for which Paterson is famous were mostly written before the First World War, and are collected in three books of poems, The Man from Snowy River and Other Verses (1895), Rio Grande's Last Race and Other Verses (1902), and Saltbush Bill, J.P. and Other Verses (1917).
This anthology contains 47 poems, which cover a wide range of subjects, including racing, cattle and sheep droving, and tributes to military patriotism stemming from the recently concluded Second Boer War.
