When college student Sienna Farren receives a cryptic note, it's from the last person she'd expect: her grandfather. Odd, because they've been estranged for years.

Sienna's once-orderly world crumbles as she uncovers the truth: her grandfather was a Mapwalker: who patrolled — and protected — the borders between our world and the Borderlands.

The Borderlands: a demonic shadow-world of cities and kingdoms that have fallen off the edge of the maps and into a half-life of madness and magic. Ruled by warlords and monsters, the Borderlands' forces constantly attempt to overrun our world, held back for thousands of years only by the wits and weapons of the Mapwalkers.

But now the Borderlands have begun to bleed into our world. Rumor has it they have discovered a weapon that can simply erase our world from existence: the Map of Shadows.

Can Sienna discover her magic in time to save herself — and the world? Can she overcome the darkness within her — the Shadow that grows within her soul?

Sienna Farren has enough to worry about: she's the newest Mapwalker, burdened with protecting our world from the intrusions of the magical Borderlands. She's struggling to figure out her feelings for Finn, a Borderlander who may be a friend – or could be trying to turn her over to his father, a power-mad Warlord of the Borderlands.

Worst of all, every time Sienna uses her magic, she falls a bit deeper into Shadow – into a place where she will stop being a Mapwalker and become a Shadow Cartographer, one of the evil magic-users who constantly threaten the map of our reality.

But when a fragment of a deadly map is recovered from a medieval plague pit in London, Sienna knows it's time to fight again. Because the map is just one piece of a larger whole: the Map of Plagues. And if the Shadow Cartographers find the remaining pieces, they can use it to bring down a plague on our world.
