"No!" Grace desperately dug at the cold damp earth, tears rolling down her grimy face. Beatrigone - with its strange inhabitants, its evil entities, and its unlikely and hideous creatures, had already claimed one life – no way would it take another!

Professor Lution, the Chancellor of Camals, (The College of Customs and Myths and Legends), has a problem. Although there have been Darlings at Camals for generations, there is considerable opposition to the latest candidate, Grace. As a compromise, the professor proposes conducting a suitability test, which on the surface is relatively simple – follow the clues to find a book.

Being ignorant of these facts, Grace is introduced to the world of the supernatural, and finds herself in Beatrigone, which is in effect, a giant film set. But then the test is hijacked by an evil genius who has a hideous spectral army at his command.

Camals has no control over those...down below, and so with the assistance of Wendy Wallace – who just 'happens' to be there, Arjunar – a historical archer, Gwiffyn - a mysterious wise woman, and four very angry Incan ghosts, plus many other 'creatures' who are not what they seem to be, Grace and Beatrigone fight for survival. And then comes the biggest twist of all.
