Elder abuse is a serious social and health problem. Older people make up a group that can be subjected to situations of abuse, vulnerability and violence. The mistreatment, abuse or neglect of the elderly, in institutions or at home, is not a new problem. Indicators of abuse depend on the type of abuse that is being committed. The symptoms and signs of abuse are very varied and present in different ways. When there is physical neglect and omission of care, the signs translate into poor hygiene and neglect, especially if they are contrasted with the appearance of who accompanies the elderly. Malnutrition and dehydration with no apparent pathological cause, clothing in poor general condition, or a pungent odor are usually some of the most obvious characteristics. Psychic abuse occurs in those situations in which the elderly receive threats from their caregivers, whether of abandonment or institutionalization. This results in emotional disturbances of the victim such as depression, confusion, anxiety, loss of self-esteem or nervousness. It is also common for the elderly to present instinctive attitudes of defense and extreme caution towards the caregiver. In cases of psychological neglect, the caregiver treats the older person with a relationship of total indifference and denies him the possibility of relating to other people.
