In September of 1985, The NEIU Golden Eagles went on a ten-hour road trip to play a football game against Cumberland College, in Williamsburg, Kentucky. The game was the first to be hosted by Cumberland College in decades. The moment promised to be a special event primed to inspire noteworthy memories. Instead, the Golden Eagles players found themselves up against two separate entities; the opposing football team, and the thousands of charged bigots hellbent on intimidating our Black teammates, members of our family on the field.
