In Emily Bronte's only novel, Catherine Earnshaw and Heathcliffe, raised together after Cathy's wealthy father took Heathcliffe in as a boy, have an obsessive and dramatic love for one another. They know that they are soulmates, drawn together irresistably if not always happily. Despite this passion, their love is not meant to be—social customs dictate that Catherine must marry someone of her own station, and Heathcliffe is considered unworthy. Bound together by need and desire only fueled by the forces keeping them apart, their love is a torturous one, leading to explosive outbursts, bad behaviour, and endless games of shifting power.
