The definitive compilation of Arthurian legends, Le Morte d'Arthur was first published in 1485, based on a number of medieval-era sources. The tales of chivalry, magic, love and betrayal, present the life of King Arthur from his birth as the son of Uther Pendragon, King of England, to his death in battle.

Merlin, Lancelot and Guinevere, the quest for the Holy Grail, and the adventures of the Knights of the Round Table were arranged and translated from 12th-century French texts and English poems. Sir Thomas Malory was believed to have written the manuscript in Newgate Prison, where he was jailed after leading a failed plot to overthrow the English throne.
