Finally, it is necessary to discuss the fantasy, the breach from real-life toward a fanciful one that the hysteric shows. There is a reason to believe that these symptoms are connected one with the other. As is shown by observations of Bernheim and others on hypnotized normal subjects as well as by ours on dogs, we must recognize many phases of the hypnosis, passing from one hardly distinguishable from the waking state to full sleep.
