It can be hard to live the beatitudes. However, by taking conscious actions every day, we can live as disciples of Christ. As Christians, the Bible tells us that there are certain concrete actions that we should take every day to please God and to live a Holy life. The faith, we as disciples, have in our hearts should be displayed in the way we think, talk, act, and live. This is because the beatitudes are the foundation of our faith.

Before we consider how to live the beatitudes, let's reflect on what can make us true disciples of Christ for a few moments. A disciple is a person who first admits he is a sinner before God and realizes that he has no hope of getting to heaven by his own efforts. This awareness can inspire us to really want to live the best possible life we can in order to gain our eternal reward.

Not too many Christians discuss the beatitudes. They are baffled by how many precepts are contained in the beatitudes on how to live with humility and love. Yet the beatitudes are considered as guidelines on how to live a Christian life that is praiseworthy to God. This should be our purpose as Christians if we really want to live our faith.

At the center of the beatitudes is humility. This is another topic that no one discusses any more, given our egotistic culture. Humility is seen as a weakness or character flaw. Thus, humility is a topic that is avoided by us because we are worried that we will become prey for others to exploit and hurt. However, the kind of humility that Jesus is encouraging us to live isn't weak at all.

Humility can be a difficult concept for us to fully comprehend. Many individuals believe that to be humble is to be a downcast person who doesn't have a strong self-image. Again, this definition of humility is wrong headed.

Humility is a virtue. Like all virtues, it is hard to develop in a consistent way unless we decide to live in a way that is countercultural and true to ourselves so that we can be pleasing to God. Humility can only be developed slowly, consciously, and intentionally.
