Since the Iliad, war has inspired stories that provide insights into human nature and oftentimes reveal as much, if not more, about the past as academic studies. This is volume one of a six volume collection that will explore differing ways in which memories of the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars were constructed. It will gather together excerpts from memoirs, diaries and letters written by French, Russian, Prussian, Austrian, British and other participants. The work will serve as a unique resource offering a multitude of perspectives and representations on the experience of war in the Revolutionary Europe, highlighting how memories of war differ between nations and individuals, and proximity and distance in time.
