Space is a specialized architectural monthly which was first published in 1966 and has been at the vanguard of covering the arts and culture scene here in Korea ever since. The magazine features not only architecture, but also diverse cultural and artistic activities across the spectrum of the fine arts. ENJOYING THE TREKKING IN THE CITY: KOLON SPORTS HANNAM • Kolon Sports Hannam opened its flagship store in Itaewon. By running both a clothing store and exhibition space, Kolon Sports Hannam seeks to attract younger consumers. Seo Donghan interpreted his client’s desired outcome through the concept ‘Urban Trekking’ and applied it to the spatial and circulation design. SPACE asked him to talk about his thought process behind his design for the flagship store of an outdoor fashion brand, one that invites us to walk, rest, and look around.

PUBLIC TOILETS FOR ALL: THE TOKYO TOILET • On the 5th of August, public toilets with transparent glass as their exterior wall opened in Shibuya, Japan. Subsequently, a series of new public toilets were built in Shibuya, including a genderless toilet and a toilet with the unique appearance like a playground facility. These are part of THE TOKYO TOILET project, created in the lead up to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics & Paralympics. The project aims to improve the spatial environments within public toilets typically perceived as ‘dark, dirty, smelly, and scary’. SPACE asked The Nippon Foundation, who is in charge of this project, to explain how these public toilets function for the public.

EXPLORING SURVIVAL METHODS THROUGH URBAN HOUSING IN ECUADOR: NATURA FUTURA ARQUITECTURA • Babahoyo is a small city in Ecuador undergoing rapid urbanisation. The recent boom in development in the city has pushed residential areas further into the outskirts, dissolving the traditional sense of community and sending the conditions in its urban living environments into decline. Natura Futura Arquitectura hopes to restore some sense of a healthy residential environment here and a community based on the unique regional qualities to be found in this small town. SPACE heard more about their attempt to change this city through a series of modest but influential interventions.
