Heritage Commercials magazine is Britain’s brightest full colour magazine for classic and vintage commercial vehicle enthusiasts. It celebrates the days when roads were still quiet and lorry driving was fun as well as hard work. But Heritage Commercials is not just about old drivers – its strong historical content looks at the various vehicle manufacturers, while it keeps up to date with the current preservation scene with stories of beautifully restored vehicles of a bygone age, and their owners, being featured. The magazine also regularly features light commercials – vans to you and me – buses and coaches, fire engines and military vehicles, as well as keeping in touch with the ever growing number of superb long distance road runs and events held throughout the year. This is living history on the move!

SOMETHING OLD, SOMETHING NEW • At their peak, Lloyds of Ludlow Ltd were running a road going fleet counted close to 60 strong while their growing collection of classics has been turning heads for more than 40 years. The company was founded in 1937 by Norman Lloyd but it was to be his son Tony who took the business on and established a reputation that was second to none. Sadly, both these representatives of the company’s first two generations have passed on. However, under the control of Tony’s daughters Alison, Liz and Joanne, the family are ensuring the Lloyds name is still being championed. Bob Tuck discovers some old friends plus an entirely new chapter to the continuing family story.

FODENS AT WAR • Foden supplied the British Army’s very first self-propelled (as distinct from horse-drawn) load-carrying vehicle. Who knew? It’s time more people did – and also about Foden’s impressive contributions to the Second World War – which included manufacturing 770 cruiser tanks, 1,550 heavy cargo trucks and 7.5 million 20mm rounds of ammo. To research the story of Fodens at war, Ed Burrows was given access to Foden archive material saved from the skip by Foden devotee John Sanderson
100 – NOT OUT • They have never been the biggest haulier in the North Riding of Yorkshire but having just celebrated the passing of their 100th birthday, PW Archer & Son Ltd certainly attain the highest of status through their longevity. Company elder Ken Archer talks to Bob Tuck about an everyday story of Northallerton folk.
THE ARTFUL DODGER • Are we a sad lot or what? It’s bad enough when we lose a loved one and even though time passes, you understandably never forget, but how many of us feel the same way over our past cars and commercials? Have you ever shed a tear when you watched your beloved classic drive off with another owner or heaven forbid on a banger truck? I recall just one of my past loves and how I restored it on a budget.
ERF EP6s Used in the waste management business from 1998-2001 • In 1998, ERF launched their EP6 range of rigid 18 tonne 4x2 chassis in a deal agreed with BMC Trucks of Turkey. During this period, I (Timothy Byrne) was working as sales and marketing manager for a number of UK waste management equipment suppliers. ERF initially imported an EP6 4x2 skip loader vehicle complete from Turkey with the bodywork being supplied by waste management equipment supplier EFE. The initial advantage of this was that skip and waste management companies could buy ready to roll vehicles from bank stock through the ERF national dealer network.

THE FORDSON WOT-1 AIRFIELD TENDER PART ONE • Imagine a January night on an open airfield. A freezing wind, straight off the North Sea, is driving a blizzard of snow across the flat open landscape, whipping it into piles on fields...
