On 20 August 1860, Robert O'Hara Burke, William John Wills and their party set off from Melbourne on an expedition to cross Australia. They were determined to succeed where other explorers had failed and be the first to explore the heart of the continent. However, in many ways their journey was a disaster. The party split, arguments broke out and supplies ran low. On 11 February 1861, Burke and Wills finally reached their goal, but both men died a tragic death on their journey back home.
