During World War 1, thousands of Australian and New Zealand (Anzac) soldiers were sent to fight Turkish troops at Gallipoli. The Anzacs fought bravely for eight months, but had to retreat in the end. Although the battle for Gallipoli was a disaster, the courage and mateship shown by the Anzacs won the world's respect. The legendary Anzac spirit lives on in Australia today.
