Francis S. Collins is a medical geneticist who once led the Human Genome Project-the title of this work comes from President Clinton's remarks upon completion of the project's first phase in 2000: "Today we are learning the language in which God created life." Collins, once an avowed atheist, follows such theologists as C.S. Lewis, whose works were influential in Collins' conversion to Christianity. Collins argues that science and faith can coexist within a scientific picture that includes theistic evolution. Science does not oppose religion, he says-instead, it enhances our understanding of religion and of the world around us. A reputed scientist and sincere believer, Collins provides an alternative answer for those who refuse to choose between science and religion. "Collins brings strong credentials to the scientific side of his argument. For the spiritual side, he draws on Christian authorities such as Augustine of Hippo, Thomas Aquinas and C.S. Lewis ... it's bracing to be reminded, in our disenchanted day, that an eminent scientist can read the genetic code as sacred speech."-Washington Post Book World
